Safety Kayak Assessments (up to Grade 4)

The IRF safety kayak assessments are aimed at kayakers with pre-existing commercial whitewater kayaking & rafting experience, who work commercially as safety kayakers on commercial rafting trips.


Course Length

2 days


Assessment levels available:

  • Level 2 assessments will be conducted on a minimum of class 2 whitewater
  • Level 3 assessments will be conducted on a minimum of class 3 whitewater
  • Level 4 assessments will be conducted on a minimum of class 4 whitewater


In order to pass a IRF safety kayak assessment potential candidates must demonstrate competence in the following areas during a guide assessment workshop:

  • Pre-departure safety demonstration.
  • Personal kayak skills applicable to the classification of the assessment
  • Flip procedures & Flip drills
  • Personal whitewater swimming skills
  • Throwbag skills
  • Display a range of kayak-based rescue skills
  • Ropework skills
  • Completion of the standard IRF written paper


Pre-requisites

  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • The ability to swim 50 meters
  • Valid basic first aid certificate (8 hours minimum) that must include CPR training
  • An up to date experience logbook or experience letter signed by your employing rafting company with the following amount of logged experience
  • Level 2 (10 runs or 20 hours of logged river time experience on class 2 water)
  • Level 3 (30 runs or 60 hours of logged river time experience on class 3 water)
  • Level 4 (50 runs or 100 hours of logged river time experience on class 4 water)


Cost 

€250.00 per student

Does not include the IRF admin fee of €60.00 if the student passes the assessment. All IRF awards are valid for 3 years when supported with a valid first aid certificate.
